Merino Wool

By Gina Rockenwagner on June 2, 2020

Today in our video series, learn more about our ethically sourced Merino wool!

Our merino wool is sourced from Uruguay and Argentina, with a mulesing free certification. Dye with confidence, knowing that Knomad’s Merino wool is sourced with a high standard of ethics, from trusted suppliers. Let’s dig into what makes merino yarn so special and lovely to work with!

What’s Merino Wool?, Why Choose It?

Merino wool is a soft yet hardy fiber, which makes it a popular favorite for knitters and dyers alike. Knitters love that merino wool is delicate enough for next to skin wear, while at the same time durable enough to stand up to repeated use. Dyers love how easy it is to dye merino wool. Merino wool absorbs dye readily and easily, taking up bright color in the blink of an eye. Consistent, reliable results mean both beginners and experienced dyers love to dye with merino. If you’re looking to dye speckles, you can’t go wrong with a superwash merino wool blend like our EGGSHELL, SNOWDRIFT, and STEAM bare yarns.

But what is superwash wool? Superwash wool has been treated with a special process that makes it machine washable, without any risk of felting. You can find all our yarns containing superwash wool by clicking the superwash filter on the left hand side of the OUR YARNS page.

In addition to superwash and non superwash merino yarn, we also offer a third type of merino, organic merino. You can find organic merino in our SPARK, BRISTLE, and EGRET undyed yarns.
